This is what a buyer checks before they shortlist metals and metalworking suppliers.
What does a buyer check before ordering tube or pipe?
They check the grade against a named standard, the dimensional standard and tolerance, and whether the tube is seamless or welded, because those decide both suitability and price. Then they check that you can supply a mill test certificate traceable to the heat.
A piping buyer is comparing offers where one supplier's price is lower because the manufacturing route is different.

What buyers check in metals and metalworking
Three things, in order: what the product is, what the paperwork proves, and when each document gets asked for.
Chemistry and mechanical properties tied to…
Mill test certificate
Asked at: with every consignment
Pressure integrity or weld soundness under…
Hydrostatic or non-destructive test report
Asked at: pressure applications
Conformity to the dimensional standard and…
Dimensional inspection report
Asked at: acceptance
First, what the product is
The fields a buyer scans before deciding whether you are worth contacting. Missing one of them usually ends the visit without an email.
- 1
Grade and material standard
The grade only means something beside the standard that defines it.
- 2
Seamless or welded
Changes price, pressure rating and acceptance on many specifications.
- 3
Dimensional standard and schedule
Outside diameter, wall thickness and tolerance.
- 4
Size range produced
A direct filter on whether the enquiry is worth sending.
- 5
End finish
Plain, bevelled and threaded ends affect installation.
- 6
Coating and protection
Galvanised, coated and bare change application and price.
- 7
Length and packing
Determines transport and site handling.
Then the paperwork
Naming the documents you can issue is what separates a supplier who can be audited from one who cannot.
| Document | What it proves | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Mill test certificateAsked at: with every consignment | Chemistry and mechanical properties tied to the heat number | Per shipment |
| Hydrostatic or non-destructive test reportAsked at: pressure applications | Pressure integrity or weld soundness under a named method | Per shipment |
| Dimensional inspection reportAsked at: acceptance | Conformity to the dimensional standard and tolerance | Per shipment |
| Third-party inspection acceptanceAsked at: export and project orders | Willingness to be inspected by the buyer's nominated agency | Publish it |
| Manufacturing licence or standard approvalAsked at: tender qualification | Licensed conformity to the product standard | Publish it |
| ISO 9001 certificateAsked at: vendor registration | Quality system, with number and certification body | Publish it |

The shortlist moment
A buyer lines up a few suppliers and keeps the ones whose proof is easy to check. The rest get a closed tab, not an email.
The buyer asks: What does a buyer check before ordering tube or pipe?
A few suppliers get compared side by side:

Willingness to be inspected by the buyer's nominated agency
A supplier with Manufacturing licence or standard approval on the page
Licensed conformity to the product standard
A supplier with ISO 9001 certificate on the page
Quality system, with number and certification body

What a useful enquiry looks like
A form that collects these fields can be answered properly the first time. A form that collects a name and a message cannot.

Enough to reply usefully, short enough that a buyer finishes it.
- Grade and standard
- No quote is possible without it.
- Size, wall thickness and quantity
- Drives price and production planning.
- Seamless or welded requirement
- Frequently fixed by the buyer's specification.
- End finish and coating
- Changes process and cost.
- Inspection requirement
- Third-party inspection needs planning at the mill.

Questions suppliers ask
Should we publish a full size and schedule table?
Yes. It is the page buyers use to decide whether to send the enquiry, and the one that saves you quoting sizes you cannot roll. A table also gets found by buyers searching for a specific dimension, which a prose description never will.
How do we compete when a buyer is comparing us with a cheaper welded product?
By making the route and its acceptance explicit rather than arguing about price. State which specifications accept which route, and let the buyer see that the offers are not comparable. Most of these losses happen because nobody explained the difference.
Is third-party inspection worth offering proactively?
Stating that you accept it costs nothing and removes a real doubt for a first-time buyer. Suppliers who resist inspection are assumed to have a reason, and the assumption is rarely generous.
