What does a brand check before placing electronics manufacturing?
They check your quality certification for their sector, how components are sourced and whether counterfeit control exists, and the test coverage you apply. Component sourcing is where most electronics programmes fail, so a sourcing policy carries more weight than a factory tour.
A hardware company is deciding who builds a product whose failure in the field would be their name on it.

Scope and specifications
- Assembly types handled
- Surface mount, through-hole, mixed and box build.
- Volume band
- Prototype, low volume and mass production are different operations.
- Component sourcing model
- Consignment, full procurement or a split of the two changes who carries risk.
- Test coverage applied
- Automated optical inspection, in-circuit, functional and burn-in.
- Sector certification held
- Medical, automotive and aerospace each require their own.
- Design for manufacture support
- Whether the design is reviewed before production.
- Traceability level
- Batch, panel or unit-level traceability.

Questions suppliers ask
What should a sourcing policy actually say?
Where components are bought, which distributors are authorised, what happens when a part is obsolete or allocated, and how counterfeit parts are detected and prevented. It is the most valuable page an electronics manufacturer can publish and almost nobody does.
How should test coverage be described?
By naming each test, what it detects and what it cannot. Buyers understand that no test regime catches everything; what damages trust is discovering after a field failure that the test they assumed was applied never was.
Does design for manufacture support matter to buyers?
It matters a great deal to first-time hardware companies, who frequently arrive with designs that cannot be built economically. Offering a design review before quoting turns a difficult project into a relationship, and it prevents the yield problems that would otherwise be blamed on you.
Check which documents and standards your buyer needs; requirements vary by market, customer and contract.
