What does a machinist check before trialling a new cutting tool?

They check the substrate and coating grade against the material being cut, the geometry against the operation, and whether you publish starting cutting data. Without speeds and feeds a machinist has to guess, and a guessed first trial usually fails.

A machine shop is under pressure on cycle time and will trial a tool only if the first attempt has a fair chance.

Why does published cutting data matter so much?

Because the first trial decides everything. A machinist with starting speeds and feeds has a fair chance of a good result; one guessing from a generic range often scraps a part and blames the tool. Publishing the data is the cheapest way to improve your trial success rate.

Is a cross-reference table giving too much away to competitors?

Competitors already know their own designations. The only person the table helps is the buyer trying to switch to you, and without it they usually give up. It is consistently one of the highest-converting pages a tooling supplier can build.

How should tool life claims be presented?

With the workpiece material, machine, cutting parameters and the competing tool all named. Tool life is entirely condition-dependent, so an unqualified multiple is dismissed by anyone experienced, while a stated test is something a machinist can try to reproduce.
