What does a buyer check before qualifying a bearing supplier?

They check the designation against the standard, the tolerance class and internal clearance, and the load ratings. Because counterfeit bearings are a live problem, they also check traceability and how you demonstrate the product is genuinely yours.

A maintenance buyer has been offered a lower price and is trying to work out whether it is the same product.

Scope and specifications

Designation and standard
The designation is the specification, and it must map to a recognised standard.
Bearing type
Ball, roller, tapered, spherical and thrust are different applications.
Tolerance class
Determines fit and running accuracy.
Internal clearance class
Governs behaviour under thermal expansion and load.
Dynamic and static load ratings
The values an engineer designs against.
Cage material and lubrication
Decide speed limit and service interval.
Operating temperature range
A common cause of premature failure when overlooked.

Details for a useful enquiry

Designation or application
Either lets you start; both are better.
Load, speed and temperature conditions
The basis of a proper selection.
Tolerance and clearance requirement
Often fixed by the machine design.
Annual volume and delivery pattern
Drives commercial structure.
Current bearing being replaced
The fastest route to a like-for-like offer.
Failure history if replacing
Frequently reveals a selection error worth correcting.

Questions suppliers ask

How do we compete against counterfeit product on price?

By making authenticity checkable rather than asserted. Publish how a buyer verifies a genuine bearing, what markings and packaging to expect, and how batch traceability works. Buyers who have been burned by a counterfeit are actively looking for a supplier who addresses it directly.

Should a full dimensional and load rating catalogue be online?

Yes, and searchable by designation. Engineers select by designation and dimension, and a searchable catalogue is how you get found at the selection stage rather than the purchasing stage — which is the point where the decision is actually made.

What should we say about failure analysis?

Offer it and describe the process. Most bearing failures are caused by mounting, lubrication or selection rather than the bearing, and a supplier who investigates and explains that becomes a technical partner instead of a commodity source.

Check which documents and standards your buyer needs; requirements vary by market, customer and contract.
