What does a buyer check before switching industrial gas supplier?

They check the purity grade against the process, the supply mode against their consumption, and who owns and tests the cylinders or the tank. Gas supply is a logistics and asset relationship as much as a product one, so the terms matter as much as the specification.

A plant engineer is comparing the total cost of a gas contract, of which the gas itself is often the smaller part.

Scope and specifications

Gas and purity grade
Industrial, high purity and ultra high purity are different products and prices.
Impurity specification
Moisture, oxygen and hydrocarbon limits decide process suitability.
Supply mode
Cylinder, cylinder pack, liquid dewar, bulk tank and on-site generation.
Cylinder sizes and valve outlets
Must match the customer's existing regulators.
Delivery coverage area
Gas is a regional business and buyers need to know if they are in range.
Cylinder ownership and rental terms
Frequently the largest cost in the contract.
Mixture capability
Custom gas mixtures are a distinct capability.

Questions suppliers ask

Should cylinder rental be shown on the website?

Publishing the structure, if not the rate, is a strong differentiator in a market where buyers routinely feel caught out. Explaining how rental and demurrage work, and what a customer can do to control them, attracts exactly the buyers who are unhappy with an incumbent.

How should we handle purity claims across grades?

Publish the impurity limits, not just the grade name, because grade names differ between suppliers and a buyer switching cannot compare them. The limits are the only thing that transfers between one supplier's data sheet and another's.

Is on-site generation worth presenting alongside delivered gas?

Yes, with the consumption threshold at which it starts to make sense. Buyers approaching that threshold are the ones most likely to change supplier, and a supplier who tells them honestly where the crossover is earns the conversation.

Check which documents and standards your buyer needs; requirements vary by market, customer and contract.
