What does an engineer check before specifying a composite part?

They check the fibre and resin system, the mechanical property data with the test method named, and the process you use, because layup, filament winding and pultrusion produce different parts from the same materials. Property data without a test standard cannot be used in a calculation.

How much property data should be public?

Publish the design-relevant values with their test standards. Composites are chosen against metals on numbers, and an engineer who cannot get the numbers will keep the metal. There is nothing proprietary in a tensile value measured to a published standard.

Should we describe our layup process in detail?

Describe the process family, the achievable fibre volume fraction and the part size envelope. That is what an engineer matches against; the specific layup schedule for a given part is genuinely proprietary and nobody expects it.

What convinces a buyer moving from metal to composite?

Comparable data and a real precedent. Property values against the metal being replaced, a weight comparison, and an application you have already done in the same sector. The technical case is usually already understood; the risk case is what stalls.
